Tennis

Tennis is a racket sport. This sport has a long history. Egyptians, Greeks and Ancient Romans played precursors to tennis. The earliest recognisable relative to tennis was “jeu de paume” played in 11th century, in France. According to this, the word “tennis” comes from “tenez”-“to take” in French. They shouted this word, while they were serving the ball. The origins of the 15, 30, 40 scoring system isn’t known. There are different stories about this. One of these stories is: this scoring was based on a clock face at one end of the court. At first it was 15, 30, and 45 but it was changed to 40 because it was shorter to say. Another story says that the reason for this was that tennis was initially played for money, the French used sous, an old coin, to mark the points.

In 1877, the All England Club held the first Wimbledon tournament. This is the oldest and the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. It’s the only one played on grass courts.

In the 21st century tennis is changing thanks to new technology. And with this the style of playing is changing too. World number 1 male tennis player now is Novak Djokovic. And number 1 women tennis player is Serena Williams.
