The White House is in the city of Washington D. C., in the USA. The president of the USA, his/her family and important people in the government live there. The house was designed by James Hoban.
It’s at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington D.C. It is over two hundred years old. It’s been the house of presidents of the USA since John Adams.
In 1814, during the War of 1812, the mansion was set on fire by the British Army in the Burning of Washington. The fire destroyed the inside of the house and much of the outside of the house. President James Monroe moved into the not completely reconstructed house in October 1817.
Construction continued with the addition of the South Portico in 1824 and the North in 1829.
The White House is made up of six floors— the two-floor basement, The Ground Floor, The State Floor, The Second Floor and The Third Floor.
The White House is one of the most popular buildings in all the USA with Mount Rushmore or the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
