April 23rd is a special day for world literature, because in 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died on that day. The celebration of this day was a spontaneus decision taken by UNESCO in París in 1995, to pay tribute to books and authors. The commemoration started in Spain specially in the city of Barcelona and some universities and was gradually extended all around Catalonia to coincide with the day of the patron Saint known as St. George. On this day it is tradicional in Catalonia the exchange of books and roses between the loved ones. This tradition was an argument to declare April 23rd World Book Day.
