The name Amazon is said to have arisen from a war Francisco de Orellana fought against a tribe of Tapuyas and other tribes from South America. The women of the tribe fought alongside the men, as was the custom among the entire tribe. Orellana derived the name from the mythical Amazons of Asia and Africa described by Herodotus and Diodorus in Greek legends. The Amazon basin has the most developed rainforest of anywhere in the world.
The Amazon River Basin is home to the largest rainforest on Earth. Reflecting environmental conditions as well as past human influence, The river is made up of over 1,100 tributaries, 17 of which are longer than 1000 miles.
Amazonia, is one of the world’s greatest natural resources. Because its vegetation continuously recycles carbon dioxide into oxygen, it has been described as the “Lungs of our Planet”.
The animals are to many the strangest looking, the largest and smallest, the loudest and quietest, the most dangerous and least frightening animals on Earth.
